OpenAI, a San Francisco Artificial Intelligence company closely affiliated with Microsoft, launched an A.I. system and neural network in January 2021 known as DALL-E. Named using a pun of the surrealist artist Salvador Dalí and Pixar’s famous movie WALL-E, DALL-E creates images from text.In this blog, we’ll let you in on everything you should know about DALL-E, its variation DALL-E 2, and share ten of the most creative AI-generated images of Dall-E 2.
So What Is DALL-E?

Now, you may be wondering what DALL-E is all about. It’s an AI tool that takes a description of an object or a scene and automatically produces an image depicting the scene/object. These people can utilize this tool for inspiration and brainstorming, or to create finished works. Even computer game companies can use DALL-E to generate scenes and characters (even though the software currently only generates still images, not animation or videos).
DALL-E 2 is a new and updated version of DALL-E. The CEO of OpenAI, Sam Altman, says that the DALL-E 2 ‘’represents a preview of what future artificial intelligence will have in store for computing.’’
Now, the original DALL-E could only render AI-generated images in a cartoonish manner, often against a plain background. However, the new DALL-E 2 can generate photo-quality high-resolution images, even with complex backgrounds, depth-of-field effects, realistic shadows, shading, and reflections. How cool is that?
One may think that this isn’t anything new because these realistic renderings were previously made possible through manual computer programs. But, creating these images required serious artistic skill. With DALL-E 2, all a user has to do is type their command (for instance, ”a panda bear wearing a dress”), and then DALL-E 2 produces dozens of photorealistic variations on the theme of that command.
In addition, DALL-E 2 also makes editing an image as easy as ABC. This is done simply when users place a box around the part of the image they want to modify and specify the modification they want to make in natural-language instructions. Referencing our last command example, “a panda bear sewing a dress,” you could put a box around the panda bear and type “make the dress orange.”Instantly, the dress would be transformed, while the rest of the image remains unaltered. Another cool feature DALL-E 2 has is its ability to produce the same image in a wide range of styles, which the user can also specify in plain text.
